A midsize luxury SUV, the BMW X5 series made its initial debut in 1999 and has proved to be a very popular model, particularly in the UK and the US. The X5 was the first sports utility vehicle (SUV) or “4 x 4” ever created by BMW.

Boasting a number of aerodynamic components, the mid-size CUV X-line offers spacious interior design with many of the expected luxury features. In addition, the exterior design is pure BMW, offering the unmistakable look while using strong, lightweight materials to help improve protection and overall performance.

To date, three generations of the BMW X5 series have been manufactured, this Sports Activity Vehicle series has branched out to include other types of models as well, including compact luxury crossovers and midsize coupe luxury crossovers. One version even sports a glass-panorama roof in place of a standard convertible design.

The BMW X5 Body Frames

E53: The first series of BMW X5 that ran from 1999 to 2006, the E53 incorporated “Land Rover” technology in its design. Plus, it came with a number of advanced features including a sophisticated navigation, communication and entertainment systems. This vehicle sported both six and eight cylinder engine models.

E70: The second generation was first produced in 2006 and was manufactured until 2012. Incorporating many of the technical advancements of the E53, the E70 was very popular. A “M” high performance variant was produced as well in 2009 and featured a V8 turbo engine.

F15: The third generation of the X5 series was just released in May, 2013 and features even more options than its predecessors. Future versions promise even more choices for engines and upgrades as well.

The BMW X5 and Carbon Fiber Technology

The development of carbon fiber over the past decade has greatly influenced the construction of automobiles with the BMW X5 being no exception. Strands of carbon fiber are bonded together by the thousands through a twill weave pattern to create auto parts more than twice as strong as steel, yet weigh less than 1/4th the amount.
